A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
