Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
