Management Shift Comes After Poor Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer game identity.
The president stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. Following a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the style."
